UPCOMING EVENTS – Don’t miss out!

Bula!

Welcome to our second blogpost since our PICAA website went up.  We made THREE project call-outs over the past 7 days on our facebook page – but you may have missed our posts.  Our classes are starting to fill up so it would be a real shame if you missed out coz you didn’t see our poster on your facebook newsfeed . Not to worry, we thought it would be a good idea to send you a reminder via this blogpost – you’re welcome 🙂

Our classes are run in a friendly and supportive environment with skilled facilitators who are able to help guide you in your learning of all-things Pasefika.  Come learn with us!

ACTING WORKSHOPS

Starting Friday 18th August 2017.    We have 2 types of classes: Acting For Youth, and Acting for Adults (the other youth lol). Our classes will be held at Sydenham Neighbourhood House in Sydenham and will be an amazing 8 weeks worth of valuable acting tuition.  Last year we ran the Acting For Youth program and all students from that class (2016) have taken part in PICAA productions ever since.  Seriously, these young people are eager to get on the stage and many of them started our acting classes as shy youngsters.  Even if you’re reading this and thinking that you can’t act but want to know what it’s like – sign up!  You will never know until you try it.  Go on, find the strength to get out of your comfort zone – come and meet other Pasefika youth who are probably thinking the same thing as you.  You may find that, when you learn about acting in this class, you might be drawn towards the backstage side of things, lighting, sound, costumes, hair and make-up – which is cool too because you can then sign up to be a PICAA volunteer and learn this stuff when we run our next production.  So if you’re keen to get a taste of theatre, send us an email for a registration form. ACY ACA calloutposter2017.png

GAGANA SAMOA CLASSES

Starting Thursday 17th August 2017. We have 2 types of classes running on the same night – beginner and intermediate level.  Classes will be run over an 8-week period and are taught by local Samoan educators and of course, we welcome our Samoan elders to visit our classes from time to time.  The classes are open to ANYONE who wants to learn so we welcome all eager learners to sign up, pay deposit and prepare for an awesome 8-weeks of learning.  If you are unsure of whether or not you are a beginner or intermediate-level learner, shoot us an email with your thoughts and we’ll guide you to the right class. Many of you may be feeling less than confident with your Samoan identity and expression of it, so if you’re signing up for these classes, then you are on the right track to becoming a more confident Samoan.  Stretching our classes over the 8-week period will give you enough time to learn the basics (beginner) and begin forming those sentences that you’ve always wanted to say but never knew how to (intermediate).  We are interested in running a third level of Gagana Samoa – which is the more serious one – all about the intense cultural stuff (aganuu and faalavelave).  But we feel that it is important that you get a good understanding of the gagana before you delve into that nek level learning.  Sign up and experience this wonderful program with us!GAGANA calloutposter2017.png

TUIGA CLASSES

Although classes start in late October, we have opened registrations this week because it takes quite a bit of effort for us to source materials needed for our students to design and create their tuiga.  Earlier this year, we ran our first Tuiga Class (Vasega 1) and our 5 students created beautiful heirlooms for their aiga. At this very moment, their tuiga are being held in an exhibition called ‘Taumeasina Samoa: Sharing Knowledge and Cultural Heritage’ at the Hunt Arts Club and Community Centre gallery, Deer Park.  The exhibition ends in 2 weeks time so go and have a look if you’re in the west side of Melbourne.  For vasega #2, we are only taking in a small number of students to allow for a more productive and supportive learning environment – therefore we will close registrations as soon as we have reached our maximum number. If you are interested in taking this class, then please send us an email asap for registration details.
