THE SPIRIT OF PASEFIKA at Moomba 2020

It has been an EXCITING few weeks for our PICAA family and local Pasefika community groups as we joined forces to become THE SPIRIT OF PASEFIKA for this year’s Moomba Festival Parade. In only one month, PICAA co-ordinated a group effort that would allow our local Pasefika groups to come together, create a set, then…

Collaboration and Community

It’s Moomba season here in Melbourne – an exciting time for our PICAA family as we work towards producing an exciting display of Pasefika cultures on Moomba Parade day. Run by the City of Melbourne, the Moomba Festival is Australia’s largest free community event, drawing in huge crowds over the long weekend. It is especially…

Our People are Precious

Rehearsal is key in our line of work. It’s important for us as a creative arts community to refine our craft but sometimes, this can also prove to be a challenge. Rehearsing takes time, it takes effort and as a collective of volunteers, who are already busy members of the community – time is very…

Pasefika Youth in the Arts

One of our strengths as an organisation is our ability to see the creative needs of Pasefika youth here in Australia. In recent years, PICAA rolled out programs aimed towards enticing Pasefika youth to the arts – the most successful of these being our ‘Acting Classes for Youth’ program which introduces students ages 10 –…

Become a PICAA 2020 Volunteer

Malo ni! We are calling out for volunteers who can join us on the big days when we are hosting events and projects. This is a great opportunity especially for those wanting to pursue the Arts, or Community-focused careers. All our events promote and engage Pasefika arts and artists here in Australia, and for 2020…

Rocking the stage – literally!

Gigging all over Melbourne in the last 4 years has taught us a few things about performances and bookings. One major lesson is the need for us to double-check if the host is aware of the type of performance we bring to the stage. The name ‘Choir’, understandably, doesn’t really give people the whole picture…

PROJECT TATAU with Sulu’ape Skinz

In October/November this year, we fulfilled a sacred Samoan cultural project that involved a partnership between PICAA and NZ/Hawaii-based SULU’APE SKINZ, led by Samoan Master Tattooist Su’a Peter Sulu’ape. In Project Tatau, 11 members of our Melbourne Samoan community received the tatau (men) and malu (women) from Sulu’ape over a period of 2 weeks. PICAA’s…
