Collaboration and Community

It’s Moomba season here in Melbourne – an exciting time for our PICAA family as we work towards producing an exciting display of Pasefika cultures on Moomba Parade day. Run by the City of Melbourne, the Moomba Festival is Australia’s largest free community event, drawing in huge crowds over the long weekend. It is especially an important event where our Pasefika performance groups can collaborate and work together on a project.

This year, PICAA is responsible for facilitating ‘The Spirit of Pasefika’ march – a gathering of up to 100 performers performing song and dance, representing Melbourne Pasefika communities. Over the past few weeks we have formed a creative team, made up of leaders from our local Pasefika performance groups, who have all come together to create a ‘set’ that involves various songs and chants that make up a performance medley.

Our Moomba creatives have come up with an exciting piece and THIS WEEK we commence mass rehearsals with all our performers. Shout out to this year’s leaders from Nesian Pearl, Nuholani, Nga Matai Purua – Maori Cultural Group, Fijian Community Association Victoria, and Tama Tatau for the collaboration!

We’ve posted call-outs to community on all our social media platforms and can’t wait to meet everyone – but there is still time for you to join us! We welcome ALL who want to represent our local Pasefika communities. Each performer gets to deck themselves out in their own island wear – traditional or modern – it’s gonna be a vibrant display of colour this year. We can’t wait!
