We have started 2024 off strongly, with our Spirit of Pasefika program. After receiving an overwhelming response from community, we have begun rehearsals for the upcoming City of Melbourne ‘Moomba Parade’ event.
This year we will be led by the newly-appointed Commissioner – Sylvia Coombe (Fijian) – from Victoria Multicultural Commission. Sylvia will be leading us from the front on parade day, and we look forward to celebrating her as Victoria’s very first Pacific Islander commissioner – a proud achievement for our community.
If you’ve been following us over the years, you will know that every year for the past 8 years, PICAA has faithfully prepared a Pasefika version of parade-walking for our 100-strong members. We don’t just walk and wave to the thousands of spectators – we loudly sing and dance and we’re proud of it!
On Monday March 11th, we will be showcasing our community of Pasefika families – mums, dads, youth and children – who represent a variety of Pasefika cultures at Moomba. They’ve been bringing their A-game to rehearsals every Thursday evenings in Sydenham and the upcoming event will be an opportunity to have whole families perform together in front of a large crowd. So put this on your to-do list for Labour day and come down to Moomba [map here]. It will be a great day out with the kids as there are lots of parade attractions to enjoy 🙂 Don’t forget to wave out to us, or give us a “Cheeee-hoooooo!!!” as we parade past.
Thanks for the support fams.
From Team PICAA.
